La figure tourmentée

 —

In 2014, the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne presented an exhibition dedicated to three major sculptors of the 20th century: Alberto Giacometti, Marino Marini, and Germaine Richier.

How, faced with the impossibility of continuing a traditional representation of the human figure in a context dominated by abstraction, did Giacometti, Marini, and Richier propose new images of humanity without abandoning figuration?

This unprecedented exhibition was an opportunity to bring together in Lausanne 70 sculptures and graphic works by these three internationally renowned artists. Sourced from prestigious public and private collections in Switzerland and across Europe, these works allowed visitors to explore different aspects of their creations: their studies of classical forms of the head and figure, the perception of the body, movement, as well as the expression of scale and space.

The exhibition was curated by Camille Lévêque-Claudet, curator at the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne.
